Job Description

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Engineer to work in our Reactor, Technology and Integration department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

As the Multiphysics Nuclear Engineer for Molten Salt Technology Application you will apply nuclear engineering principles and methods to design, develop, test, and analyze nuclear equipment and systems - specifically focusing on molten salt technology applications. This entry analyst position will integrate various physics (i.e., multi physics) utilizing NEAMS based MOOSE codes to perform various analyses of molten salt systems. Most of the initial work will focus on validating existing electrochemical models of salt and structure interactions from experiment salt loop data and electrochemical experiments using fluoride and chloride salts. Future work may focus more heavily on applying these methods towards enhancing pyro-processing efficiencies, molten salt fusion blanket design, and Molten Salt Reactor fuel cycle non-proliferation analysis. This position is part of the INL Nuclear Nexus.

Responsibilities

  • Work with designers, analysts, and customers to develop experimental requirements to analyze molten salt technology for fission reactors, fusion systems, and pyro-processing.
  • Select and widely apply advanced nuclear engineering design principles, theories, and concepts (which may include reactor fuel and packaging). Decompose project objectives into defined and controlled design requirements.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to develop and define a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design functions are maintained.
  • May perform integrated analyses to ensure that experimental requirements and facility safety bases are met.
  • May perform integrated analyses to ensure that storage, transportation, and disposal requirements and facility safety bases are met.
  • Defend analytical methods and results in management and independent reviews.
  • Perform analysis and design tasks supporting project/program interactions with (experiment) sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations to ensure that project

related operations are performed in a manner that is consistent with the facility authorization.

  • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design. Develop and improve models and analysis methods.
  • Prepare reports and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Level 2: Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering or a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution and 2 years of experience or Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering or a directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution or a PhD in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.

Preferred Education/Knowledge/Experience

  • Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, core design, analysis tools/methods, and/or closely related technical areas.
  • Professional experience or working knowledge of MOOSE based nuclear codes (i.e., Griffin, Pronghorn, BlueCrab)
  • Professional experience or working knowledge of Monte Carlo codes (i.e., OpenMC, Serpent)
  • Professional experience or working knowledge of Thermochemistry modeling (i.e., Factsage, Thermochimica, PyCALPHAD)

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds without assistance.
